My key responsibilities included full-time care for a young girl

over the course of one week in the school holidays while her

grandmother was working. Planning and engaged in age

appropriate activities, including educational games and outdoor

play, to ensure a balance of learning and fun. Prepared meals,

maintained a safe and clean environment, and adhered to the

child’s daily routine to provide consistency and comfort. This

taught me how to communicate effectively with the grandmother

to ensure all expectations were met and to update her on the

child’s well-being.

During my teaching practical in a Grade R class, I worked closely

with a Mentor Teacher to design and deliver lessons that catered

to the developmental needs of young learners. I assisted in

creating and implementing engaging, play-based activities that

fostered foundational skills in Language, Mathematics, and Life

Skills. Under the guidance of my mentor, I gained hands-on

experience in classroom management, different instructions, and

student assessments. This experience deepened my

understanding of early childhood education and enhanced my

ability to collaborate effectively in a classroom setting.

Part-time Tutor • All in Educational Center

As a part-time teacher, I teach History and Geography to Grade 6,

7, 8 and 9, as well as Life orientation to Grade 8 and 9, and

Economic and Management Sciences to Grade 7. I create and

teach lessons that follow the curriculum, making sure students

understands and stays interested in the subjects. I use different

teaching methods to reach students with various learning styles

and regularly assess their progress to help them improve. I also

lead discussions and activities that help students see how what

they learn in class applies to real life. This experience is helping

me improve my skills in teaching, classroom management, and

working with students across different grades and subjects.

Private After Hours Tutor • Autistic Student

Being a private tutor for a matric student with autism is both

challenging and rewarding. My responsibilities include creating

personalized lesson plans to cater to the student’s unique

learning needs and pace, adapting various teaching methods such as visual aids, hands-on activities, and technology to keep the

student engaged, and establishing a consistent routine to provide

a structured learning environment, which is crucial for students

with autism. I regularly communicate with the student’s parents

to discuss progress, challenges, and strategies to support learning

at home and provided emotional support and encouragement to

build the student’s confidence and reduce anxiety related to

schoolwork. Through this experience, I developed greater

patience and empathy, understanding the unique challenges

faced by students with autism. I learned to think creatively to

overcome obstacles and keep the student motivated and

engaged. Additionally, I became more adaptable in my teaching

methods, realizing that flexibility is key when working with

diverse learning needs, and enhanced my communication skills to

effectively convey information in a clear and supportive manner.
